Is Sarcasm A Good Idea?

Hello, lovelies! Today I’m sharing a verse that just might change your mind about sarcasm. Here is 2 Corinthians 1:17-19:

17 Do you think that I made these plans without really thinking? Or maybe you think I make plans as the world does, saying yes and no at the same time.18 But if you can believe God, then you can believe that what we tell you is never both yes and no. 19 The Son of God, Jesus Christ, the one that Silas, Timothy, and I told you about was not yes and no. In Christ it has always been yes.

-2 Corinthians 1:17-19 (ERV)

When we are sarcastic it can be misleading, confusing, and even hurtful. For instance a friend might say: “Wow, that dress does sooo not make you look like an elephant.” That person took a compliment, twisted it up, and made it into the exact opposite: an insult. You might reply with a cheerful “Thanks!” before you realized that statement was meant to attack you! That’s embarrassing, right?

Definitely! As Christians, we want to be nice to everyone:

31 Do for others what you want them to do for you.

Luke 6:31 (ERV)

So insulting someone is bad in itself. But twisting it up in to a compliment? That’s even worse! Some may argue that being sarcastic doesn’t always have to be mean. That’s true in some cases, but not most. Even if someone who is being sarcastic isn’t meaning to be hurtful, it can come across as misleading, mean, and confusing.

Bottom line: Sarcasm is NOT a good idea!
