What is Love?

What is love? For some people, love is holding hands, a kiss on the cheek, a thoughtful gift from a friend. Love comes in all shapes and sizes. But God has a specific kind of love. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 tells us exactly what love is.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

As humans, we are perfectly imperfect:

23 For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

So even our love is sinful. We say we love the thoughtful gift our friend gave us, but really we envy the gifts that belong to others. Or, we brag about our gift to others to try to put ourselves on top. Being a Christian means putting others before yourself, and that’s what love is.

So this Valentine’s Day, instead of focusing on pink and candy, focus on spreading love to others. Not proud love, not dishonoring love, not envying love, but protecting, trusting, hoping, preserving love.

God IS love. His love is deeper than a thousand oceans, bigger than a million universes. Today, share His Great Love with others.
